Question
The goal of Volume was to explore the creation of temporary sanctuary in public space.
Answer
Volume prototyped a pair of audio and video projections. In one version a Muybridge horse and a song were turned on if a person was sense in the area of the projection. In the other, a person's presence decreased visual noise and made auditory noise slowly decrease exposing a calm song. Both attempted to create sanctuary and stillness in a space associated with quick passage.
Process
Volume was a more cerebral and artistic exploration in emotional human interaction with technology. Furthermore, the project was based around a series of quick rounds of role, look-and-feel, implementation, and integrated prototypes. Volume was a collaboration between Carrie Mae Krechye, Jia Zhang, and myself, where I contributed concept design, Processing programming, and interaction design.
Volume began with space exploration and documentation. My team and I studied not only the physical space itself but also the pattern of movement trough the lobby and the types of existing interactions in the space. We then spent several days creating simple prototypes to propose methods of interactions, potential impacts of an installation, and visual treatments.
My team completed our exploration with several days of in the field testing and on the fly iterating to create the best possible solution to our question.
