Question
Toy Kit began out of the desire to create a simple and engaging experience for kids.
Answer
Toy Kit is an iPhone puzzle game for young children. Based on the theme of "Helper Vehicles", a child can construct, through shape recognition, a Fire Truck, Police Car and Helicopter. When the puzzle is complete, the child gets a surprise and sees the name of the completed vehicle.
Toy Kit is available on the iTunes App Store
Process
Toy Kit was collaboratively developed with one other person. We set out to create our first prototype within seven days, which we were able to accomplish. We began by each creating 5 simple prototypes for possible apps. As it would be parents with iPhones downloading the app, I spent time interviewing adults who worked often with children, including a nanny and a childhood speech therapist, to see what types of applications they would be interested in. We then went through several iterative rounds of choosing our favorite ideas and developing those further. In the end, we landed on the idea of a model kit type of puzzle game where children would be able to drag pieces of different vehicles together.
My job was then to take on the programming of the app, while my partner worked on the visuals.
After a workable version of the app was created, we tested with several children. Their reactions were invaluable to improving the interaction. The app is still a work in progress, which we intend to expand and improve.
