Question
To lead my exploration of Arrivals, I asked how I could emphasize the geographical diversity of the Parsons student body within the constraint of a physical installation.
Answer
Arrivals is a proposed installation for the Parsons lobby space at 2 W 13th St. in New York City. The installation encourages Parsons students to consider the great diversity of the student population by listing all of the countries in the world where students come from on an old-style train board. As students swipe their school ID cards on the turnstile to enter the building, the tally from their home country increases by one. The count is reset at midnight each day.
Process
Arrivals was developed as a class assignment to design an installation into the new Parsons lobby. Having already done a study of the physical space, traffic patterns, and usage for Volume, I began by mind mapping out potential themes and interactions. Mind mapping allows me a sort of stream of consciousness for generating initial ideas and finding unexpected connections through seemingly unrelated concepts. By mind mapping, I landed on my question of how to emphasize the Parsons' diversity.
Next, I created several potential concepts to answer my question. Through group critique, I landed on the train station metaphor as the most effective approach. I then went through several quick iterations of proposed interactive and visual treatment of the installation.
Finally, I created a 3D model of the space with the installation and created stills of the space showing the installation over of 24-hour period.
